It has been a privilege to serve as the Chair of the Limestone District School Board of Trustees in this first term of a new four-year term in office. I would like to thank my fellow trustees for the work that we have undertaken focusing on learning and leading in safe and inclusive environments.
Three new trustees joined seven incumbents as a result of the November 2022 school board elections, including the historic addition of the first Indigenous Trustee appointed by the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte. The issue of representation and having an Indigenous voice at the Board level has been a topic of considerable discussion by trustees in recent years. The addition of an Indigenous Trustee to the Board, now brings the number of officials to ten.
This Spring, trustees began the development of a new Strategic Plan to help guide the district forward over the next few years. The Strategic Plan lays the foundation and sets the goals that drive programs and operations in Limestone. Through consultation from students, families, staff, board committees and community partners, feedback will be gathered on areas of strength and improvement throughout the board.
This undertaking is significant and critically important for the future of the Limestone. The plan will help shape the future directions and culture of the district.
In addition to our governance work as a Board, we supported Limestone staff moving forward on several key initiatives this past year, including further focus on anti-racism work and equity and inclusion with the creation and launch of a Human Rights video and school poster to increase knowledge and awareness of the board’s Human Rights Complaint reporting tool, undertaking a Special Education Review with students, families and staff and ongoing work in the areas of equity, diversity and inclusion that were identified through The See Yourself in Limestone: Workforce Census and Belonging Survey.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish to acknowledge the leadership of Director Burra, along with the work of senior staff, and all Limestone employees, who ensure students are welcomed daily to safe and inclusive spaces where everyone can achieve success. Please accept our heartfelt thanks for always being student-focused, and for supporting all of us through this first-year of a new four-year term. Through all of this, trustees remained focused on making decisions that effectively served all students.
Robin Hutcheon, Chair of the Board
